Actually many people use procmail because it is very easy to add levels of filtering, procmail is such a good tool for mail filtering you can eaily by editing the procmail files to get it perform additional filtering. Such advace filtering is usually hard to do with pine. I run fetchmail+procmail+spambouncer <www.spambouncer.org> to get rid of spam.
