As Gnome is coming up, the sound is there. But as soon as the splash screen disappears, nothing makes sounds anymore. The window manager, games, mplayer... In Desktop preferences/Sound, the sound server startup is checked as is the system bell. When I look through the sounds events, the Play Sound button doesn't complain when clicked (unless the sound file doesn't exist), but there is no sound.
