Ok, let's try a 2.6 kernel... should I take away APM from the kernel options? I have checked it and it's there currently as a module.

First things first, linux 2.6 has much better ACPI support so it is worth it if you can try to use one of the 2.6 kernels and see if it recognises your machine.
