I've had many problems with the Nvidia module and, frankly, I'd be happy to
dump the card altogether to something that is a little more open and
integrated with the kernel. This opinion won't, however, help to solve your
problem.

The only way I could get the Nvidia card to work was to do the following:

1. Download the Nvidia 6111 package from nvidia.com. Before you ask, no the
version in gentoo wouldn't work, nor would the latest version from
nvidia.com work either. Only the 6111 version seems to work on my system.

2. Make sure your /usr/src/linux link is correct for the kernel you're going
to run on.

3. Follow the instructions for running the downloaded package. For 2.6.10+
kernels, you'll need to extract the package contents and go through a few
cycles of trying to build, reading the log failures from
/var/log/nvidia-installer.log to identify build failures, adjust code base
to resolve the failure, then rebuild. Be sure to do all of this from the
console (not X).

4. Eventually you'll have a kernel module built and installed for your
system. I had to reboot in order to use the new module.

5. X will work until you try to exit X to console mode and restart into X
mode (second attempts to start X on my box result in a frozen system).

Note that since this module is compiled and installed for the current
kernel, any time you upgrade the kernel will require
uninstall/rebuild/reinstall of the module for the new kernel.

Like I said, all of these steps are pretty stupid and wouldn't be necessary
with a more compatible video card. Nvidia sucks, IMHO.

Besides, I tried to test with glxinfo | grep direct it finished with
