Of course, Thunderbird support it.
1. Rightclick on the folder and select "Properties"
2. Activate Checkbox "Check this folder for new messages"
3. Wait for new messages

Problem in Thunderbird:
You have to see the folder in the tree to realize new messages. The parrent-folder isn't marked.

What Thunderbird are you using? I do seem to remember this feature from the past, but if I right-click on a folder and select "Properties" in Thunderbird 1.0 (which I am using right now), I do not have that checkbox; the only "Property" I have available to edit is the name of the folder and its default character encoding.

But it's online available for subfolders of inbox (i can't create other)
inbox is always checked and newsgroups doesn't have subfolders, therefore there's no checkbox.
