Hi Alec,

Thanks for the reply.

Examining /etc/conf.d/local.start in nano, I see nothing that's enabled in
any way, no entries other than the usual boilerplate and all of that is
commented out. Should there be an entry there of some kind? Is the start-up
script examining this file and, finding nothing after a while, resolving to
the login prompt? I timed the transition. It's about 22 seconds. Network
starts properly, no kernel or grub troubles, etc. I'm stumped.
