Are you sure that it's in maildir format or in mbox? All my Mailing list
mails are in mbox format. Evolution tends to have a field day when I
empty the trash.

Evolution has a folder that "virtual" and you can define either a few
folders, a specific folder, a specific sender etc.. and then you can
serach from there. Works wonders.
