Hi,
Following the guide, I set up .fetchmailrc as

poll pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
    protocol pop3
    user "$username"
    password "$password"

and ran

fetchmail -av -m "/usr/bin/procmail -d %T"

Also, ~/.procmailrc is copied directly from the guide.

Fetchmail then accesses the server ok and reads the
mail but it doesn't flush it.

You mean "fetch", flushing is destroying messages on the server after fetching.

Consequently(?) it
doesn't appear in my mutt inbox. Can anyone see what
I'm doing wrong?

Did you correctly instruct mutt to read mail where procmail is delivering it?

Maybe fetchmail cannot retrieve mail from yahoo servers; there is a
"fetchyahoo" package in portage, maybe what you need?
cheers,

Yahoo does allow POP3 access as a paid-for add-on feature.
