x11-xorg provides the exact same libraries as xfree86, so a recompilation of your x-based applications/libraries should not be necessary. Also, please note that xfree is deprecated in portage (the ebuild no longer exists) -- even if you manage to reemerge it (portage overlay, etc), all the dependencies will be relative to x11-xorg, not xfree.
