In the kernel config, go to device drivers, sound, disable all
OSS stuff, go to alsa drivers and enable
<M> Intel/SiS/nVidia/AMD/ALi AC97 Controller
<M> Intel/SiS/nVidia/AMD MC97 Modem (EXPERIMENTAL)
After installing your kernel, try running alsaconf from the
alsa-utils package.
