I learned about it on this list.  Evidently, .la files (sometimes?) have 
the gcc version hardcoded as part of the path for certain libraries, in 
particular libstdc++.  fix_libtool_files.sh is a simple script find the 
references to the old version and replace them with references to the new 
version, without recompiling.
