I'm not sure how important using portage is to you, but I know that the
"Life with Qmail" installation is a snap. I've done it myself fifteen or
twenty times of slackware systems, and it always works flawlessly.  I
don't know what modifications would need to be made for it to work with
portage, perhaps someone else can speak to that, but I think its certainly
worth a look.
