My fundamental problem that I didn't have the correct drivers installed for my card. I needed to emerge the:
echo "net-wireless/madwifi-driver ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords emerge net-wireless/madwifi-driver
I then had a 'ath0' device to play with. The rest of the pieces snapped into place just as documented.

That first became available with baselayout-1.11.* which I think are all still keyworded with ~arch. etc/conf.d/net and etc/conf.d/wireless are much more flexible than they were in any version prior to 1.11
