I don't know if this is the solution, but I've found that every time I make
a major kernel recompile (e.g. move from 2.6.8. to 2.6.9) I have to
re-emerge ipw2100. Unless you deleted it, it should already have what it
needs in /usr/portage/distfiles
# emerge ipw2100
Then:
# modprobe ipw2100
And see if it works. If so, then try to restart the NIC.
# /etc/init.d/net.eth1 restart
