I did a fresh install (minimal, stage3) of 2004.3. When it came time to emerge things I would get repeated failures. All the mirrors selected by mirror select seem to have failures of one type or another. It seems like mirror select decided that since they failed in such a short time, they were the quickest.
My personal favorite mirror is DataPipe's. The one from the OSU Open Source Lab has always worked fine for me, too, though it's not as fast. Add this to your /etc/make.conf:
GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo http://gentoo.osuosl.org"
That should make it automatically use DataPipe's mirror, which has never failed me before...
Now that I think about it, I had trouble with all of the mirrorselect mirrors, too...
