Does anyone know why portage would tell me that 2.4.28-r5 is the
newest version of the gentoo-sources when I type "emerge -s
gentoo-sources", yet "ls /usr/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources" shows
that the 2.6 sources are present.
portage is running version: 2.0.51-r3
no kernel installed yet.
contents of /etc/make.conf:

As sayd for now emerge gentoo-dev-sources, the full answer is:
2.6 series of linux will be the default with gentoo 2005.0, that kernels are there (masked) to make the swap possible

# <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (1/12/2004)
# Masking all 2.6 versions of kernel packages which were originally
# 2.4 only so that we can merge 2.6 with 2.4 without forcing a
# mass upgrade.
