Hi, I also get this problem. I can use Xcdroast as root, but can't as user (with correct group settings). IMHO the problem is Xcdroast's wrapper program. It executes cdrecord with SUID bit if I'm not root (I don't know how it does it) and say the above-mentioned error message. My only workaround is k3b. Just a note, when it comes for first time, it wants to change permissions on cdrecord, it isn't a good idea.
