How do I load this "loop support" when a plain new system is up for the first time? Do I have to reboot from the LiveCD, chroot and then run "... --menuconfig ..."?

during the install procedure I've just run "genkernel all" without
configuring the kernel (planed for after reboot). Some modules are
missing so I tried "genkernel --menuconfig all". Now I get the error
that the loop support is not loaded.
How do I load this "loop support" when a plain new system is up for the first time? Do I have to reboot from the LiveCD, chroot and then run "... --menuconfig ..."?
