Thanks Andy. Nothing in /var/log, but the `genkernel --help`
was indeed helpful. Unfortunately it turns out that by default
you get nothing, and now the build has been running for so
long that I don't want to stop it. Next time ...

Did you try looking in /var/log? That's the standard place for log
files to be dumped.
Also, try `man genkernel` or `genkernel --help`. Either of those
might say where the log is dumped.
