Hi,
Look at the end of /etc/rc.conf. You should be able to just set XSESSION="Gnome" and, if you use a dm, set DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm". The XSESSION variable should be enough to start Gnome instead of anything else when you run startx. If you use a DM, you should be able to choose what desktop to start before you login.
