If I remove the card, /dev/sdb1 doesn't seem to ever go away unless I unplug the reader from the machine and plug it back in.

What's the secret to good plugging with this type of device?

You might have to write a rule in /etc/udev/rules.d. See -

http://www.reactivated.net/udevrules.php

The rules seem to be OK - in fact I've been able to write one that creates a /dev/smartmedia when sdb1 appears. The problem is that the kernel doesn't seem to detect the media going away so that the udev rule can be triggered. Perhaps I can write a rule to create /dev/sdb1 when /dev/sdb is created - it not going away is not a big deal if I can get it to appear without jumping through hoops.

Thanks for the 8-in-1 suggestion. I'll check it out.
