root probably won't work as the XAUTHORITY file might not get updated when you "su".


in the terminal, make sure your .Xauthority file wasn't munged. An easy way would be to close and reopen the terminal, then try again. If that doesn't work, you could always do

xhost +

and disable X authentication.. but only for a little bit.
