If you find a P4 with stepping of E0 or later, it too has the 64-bit
extensions built-in. And can be used as an x86_64. But there may be
issues. I've not seen any glowing reports of Intel's efforts in this
space. The new P4s may be better than their previous attempts. Still,
the P4 has maxed out speed wise, thus the only new selling features
is L3 cache or dual-core - the other thing AMD has had planned for some
time and the VIA has decided to do. Though IBM ships multi-core cpus
now as does Fijitsu/Sun with Ultra-sparc cpus.

Yes, it's all 64-bit. It's also possible, with work doing a chroot environment,
to run a full 32-bit only user environment. And those things that don't work
in 64-bit environment - binary plugins/apps, will eventually get there later
this year when Mictosoft gets off its collective butt and ships WinXP64. Put
another way - folks like Real have little current incentive
when their main customer base remains in 32-bit mode.
