I would try to scan /etc/hosts - maybe there is something strange? Probably you already did that... :-) Something in /etc/networks ? Some PROXY settings are in effect? If you can, try to scan the network traffic - ideally, do it from two boxes - the machine that has problems, and from an external one - to see what data goes physically on-the-wire (in case the kernel does something bad) Using 'tcpdump' or 'ethereal' you should be able to see the DNS queries and responses, and maybe that will give some enlightment? Strange and interesting. ;-) Good luck!
