I don't know if that's the default. If I were to *guess* I would guess that
the default should be i686-pc-linux-gnu.
However, did you delete the stage3 tarball? The original make.conf will be
in there.
IIRC a "from scratch" stage3 install should only take an hour or two. (I
don't really know first-hand... I usually do stage1.)
