No, actually i'm very comfortable with kernel configuration. I don't think there is anything wrong with my kernel settings per se as brltty isn't actually dependent on the kernel in that sense. the problem at least seems to be with being able to access /dev/vcsa or /dev/vcc/(whatever); either I'm trying to load brltty too early for the device to be found or I'm using a wrong action or something in the line in inittab.
I also see that the device permissions are supposed to be 660 for /dev/vcsa or friends but it looks like those devices are set at 600 on gentoo; I don't know if this makes any difference or not since brltty starts fine manually once I'm logged in.
