I am currently using a riva tnt2 on a server and it workd

did you emerge nvidia-kernel?
did you specify in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.*  to load the
nvidia module?
Did you specify nvidia as your drive in your xorg.conf ?

Try that if you havent yet
