So probably Matrox 400/450/550, Ati 9200/9250. For the resolutions, memory would preferably be 64 MB or more. Some of the lessor known cards - S3 Savage, XGI Xabre, do work, but it's best to look at the bug database over at Xorg and Gentoo before committing. Of the above, the Ati 9200/9250 will give you the most performance in 3D. It has or had some problems at 1600x1024 in Xorg 6.8.0-r3. Again, it's best to visit the Change logs and bug databases to see if anything will possibly affect you or is something you can live with for the time being. Also looks around for setup guides for the card you choose. A few simple things can get you 25% more performance in 3D, if you know about them. Fwiw - even a Matrox 450 can be used to play Unreal Tournament. Though that's at 800x600 with all the eye candy turned off and that was on a 2P PII 600 MHz system. As a general shopping guide - don't buy the most expensive card in the price range. Buy in the upper 2/3rds of the price range. The extremes of the price range tend to be where the most corners are cut and the most profit margin is being made - poor price/performance. And don't believe any of the above. It just represents the reality distortion field I live in. Listen to the others here as well. Bob -- -- [email protected] mailing list
