[gentoo-user] modules-update: can't generate /etc/modprobe.conf

I have just installed gentoo on an x86 box.  When I do

# modules-update

I get

 * Warning: could not generate /etc/modprobe.conf!

I'm logged in as root and the permissions on /etc/modprobe.conf are OK.

Any suggestions?
