AFAIK, vesafb (or at least vesafb-tng, that's what I've tried) is
working with these cards. I had some troubles to suspend or hibernate
with vesafb-tng, so I use radeonfb - YMMV, as your card isn't exactly
the same as mine.

In my opinion: You don't need the proprietary drivers, go with the open
source Xorg drivers.
If you decide to use the open source drivers provided by Xorg, you
simply do not have 3D acceleration. The DRM-drivers from dri.sf.net
("x11-base/x11-drm") only support cards up to the radeon 9200
(rv280/M9+), as stated on their website. Everything above is work in
progress: http://r300.sourceforge.net/.
If you want 3D acceleration with those cards, there's no alternative to
the proprietary ATI drivers yet.
If you do not need 3D acceleration on your notebook, I'd suggest you to
go with the open source radeon drivers until the proprietary ATI
drivers support some basic features which - at least in my opinion -
are quite important to notebook users, such as the ability to suspend
or hibernate your system, or to switch from X11 to a framebuffered
console and back again. I do not know how good the proprietary driver's
power management features are, but I can say that the open source Xorg
drivers do support it, and it works.
I wonder who's first: The dri.sf.net team with working 3D support for
the more recent ATI cards, or ATI with matured drivers usable on
notebooks... ;-)
