You could install the entire Mozilla suite, or if you want the news / mail reader on the side then try Thunderbird. I'm using the entire Mozilla suite for browsing, e-mail, news, IRC... and I don't really have any complaints. My understanding is that all the applications are "middle of the road" ones...
