Make sure you have "Video mode selection support" enabled in your kernel (Device Drivers -> Graphics support -> Console display driver support). Add vga=ask to your kernel boot line. When it boots and prompts, type in scan to see all available modes (this will take a few minutes). Also see Documentation/svga.txt in the kernel sources. Once you have an appropriate vga= number, put that in your kernel boot line.


Alternatively, you can use svgatextmode, but this doesn't take effect until the appropriate init script is run.
