I've always used lynx which seems decent enough, though annoying as I expect any console web browser might be. Are any of them, w3m, links, elinks, amaya, etc better interface and navigation-wise?
That's a matter of opinion. Try them and see. (Amaya isn't a console browser though). I generally use lynx if I want a text browser. On the other hand, framebuffer, gpm and Links can give you a graphical browser running at a high resolution (I've run it at 1600x1200), with mouse control but without needing X.
