I'm sure I would tell you if I new. All I can offer is that it wasn't that far out of date from "gentoo head". Maybe a few weeks at most. As it turns out, Ralph Slooten diagnosed the cause...
I'm also having issues after my upgrade to courier-imap-4.0.1 and courier-authlib-0.53. I had disabled authdaemon before, and had courier-imap-3.0.8 using the auth modules directly. Now, it seems that the authmodules option is being ignored in my configuration file, and authdaemon is always being used. Any ideas?

Actually, nevermind. I found a page that describes how to authenticate exim smtp via authdaemond, so I'll keep it around.
