I suspect you have other problems, but frankly have no idea where to
start. Since you say you reset the password, I'm assuming you can to
a normal (non-su) login to root. If you're not sure, try it in a console
before you log out... and don't log out until you get this fixed at least.
If you cannot log in as root on gentoo, you're in a lot of trouble.

You might be right about the source of the problem. I'm still logged in
to KDE, & I have a open terminal window that was already su'd. I hadn't
tried rebooting, since I'm not confident that I can get back into
root... As you mention, it's possible that I might not be able to get
back in at all, so I'll wait to reboot until I'm certain that the
problem is resolved.
