Has anyone any advice on getting audacity working on Gentoo? Every time I
start it I get error messages about the sound i/o system and host not found.
Googling around the problem appears to be that my set up uses Alsa and
Audacity uses OSS. Audacity looks for /dev/dsp but it does not exist. I
checked and I have OSS emulation installed. I have also turned off the sound
under KDE as this was recommended in one posting but it makes no difference.
If I check the preferences, where I normally pick /dev/dsp, the pull down
menus are empty. It seems I need to get audacity working with Alsa, for which
I need portaudio 19, how would I do this on Gentoo? This machine dual boots
into Mandrake and Audacity works under Mandrake so I am sure the hardware is
OK.
