Sounds like you dont so much need an archive, as just get the older
stuff out of the inbox?

Why not create a new sub-directory in imap and just shuffle the older
stuff into there?

I have them going back a number of years and just periodicly create
something like "archive-20041231" for mail up to the given date.

No need to script it or anything else - mail readers like evolution will
do this in a few clicks, search and then & drag&drop.  I have a few
hundred meg of mail strung across a number of accounts available this
way in evolution.
