In my case, since I compile my new kernels in /home/wrc/kernels,I rarely run into a package that looks for the symlink in /usr/src. I haven't used symlinks in so long, I forgot about that until I ran into the svgalib problem. In any case, make sure the symlink points to the correct kernel source, and that the source directory has a config file, i.e., has been configured.
