Just use the PIII. It works. Add sse, mmx, and sse2 to your USE flags. I usually wait until after I've finished stage 1 to do this. More memory >512MB will give more performance boost than CFLAGS. As a laptop, if you aren't going to use gdm or entrance, set the pam USE flag to - "-pam". This assumes you do not need pam functionality. As a single user on a laptop, it typically isn't necessay. In the kernel select Pentium M as the cpu type. Also, select ACPI, but not cpu under that. And I find powernowd works very well with my Pentium M to auto-set freq based on load. > b) What else should I know to success in less than two days? Please > enlighten my path with your experience :-) > For 2 days? Start with Stage 3. Or for 2 days and a stage 1 start, use something fairly lightweight - Fluxbox, Openbox, or Enlightenment. Use Dillo, sylpheed, mutt, rox, electric eyes (or gtqview), pan, abiword and gnumeric. Use xdm as the session manager should you desire one. If you need a web server, look at monkeyd. It supports php, thus does most things needed for web development. Apache has many more features, but takes a lot of resources. Save the big compiles for nights and weekends.
