You should try your emerge of OO without a desktop running. This will reduce the the amount of memory that is used by the desktop.
If you use gdm:
rc-update del gdm default
replace gdm with whatever desktop manager you are using then reboot and you should have a text login. Login and do your emerge of OO.
Then when the compile is finished you can add back the desktop manager
rc-update add gdm default
