Jean-Francois,

Yes, most of the channels are unmuted. BTW, if I switch on "Spread
front to surround" in alsamixer I am also able to hear on 4 speakers, but it's the front sound replicated on rear.

In the next days I'll try to extract an AC-3 (5.1) audio track from a DVD of mine for you to test.

May I ask what kernel/alsa versions are you using? Did you set up any particular ~/.asoundrc or /etc/alsa.conf?

thanks,

raffaele

Has anybody had any luck getting more than 2 channels out of the above
southbridge?

My system:
Athlon64 3000+
Asus k8v se deluxe (via8237 southbridge + AD1980 codec)
kernel 2.6.9-r14 (using gentoo-dev-sources for amd64)
via82xx alsa driver
IceWM (no KDE/Gnome)

Stereo sound is ok, but I can't get surround channels to work.
Electrical connections and volumes are ok, because if I select "Spread
front to surround" or "Exchange front/surround" from alsamixer I get
(front) sound from surround speakers.

I've tried the alsa included in the kernel, and the more recent
alsa-driver 1.0.7, no difference.

I've tested it with
$ mplayer -channels 4 (or 6) dvd://1
$ aplay -D surround41 file.wav

Any hint would be greatly appreciated, I ruined my fingertips googling
for an answer...

I have the same chipset but with a shuttle XPC. Did you unmute most of
the channels in the alsamixer ? Right now all of my 4 speakers are
playing music. I can't say it's surround but at the very least I'm
sure it's duplicated. Maybe by unmuting the right channel it should be
fine. If you have a true suround sound file to test I could give it a
go. Just send it to my gmail account.

Hopes this helps

Jean-Francois
