Why not use fbspalsh and set splash to silent instead of verbose. kernel /2.6.10-gentoo-r6/kernel-2.6.10-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/hda3 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,[EMAIL PROTECTED] splash=verbose,theme:emergence
This will give you a screeen much like the one shown when booting a live cd. You need to emerge splashutils though.
