Thanks for the advice, but I can do a emerge-websync to get back portage (or at least a copy that's a few days old) I've booted for a R4 Live CD and I'm just fsck'ing the drive now. Seems as though the superblock was warped... rebuilding now so I'll let you know.. at least I'm onto something! (Note to self: Never, ever, ever, ever, ever put off a stage4 again!)
