and I have no idea what documentation you are reading that says you need an initrd[/disclaimer],
http://webpages.charter.net/decibelshelp/LinuxHelp_UDEVPrimer.html

have been the main documents I've been following but also worth reading (and not at all computer related)

http://www.beecomix.com/

but a combination of the Gentoo LVM2 guide at

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/lvm2.xml

and the TDLP LVM how-to at

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/index.html

worked fine for me.... and say nothing about an initrd image.

but looking over them, they say nothing about udev and so far everything is working fine except I cannot find my lvm volumes. my volume group has disappeared (had a working lvm and storage was set up before conversion to udev), the rules for generating volume group name seems to be failing. btfoom

The result of the duopoly that currently defines "competition" is that
prices and service suck. We're the world's leader in Internet
technology - except that we're not.
