Well the kernel should have nothing to do with it as GRUB died before giving me a chance to select which kernel I wanted to boot. Don't know what was up, but things are still stable, and I'm not sure I've ever had to reinstall grub to the MBR once I had it working. I'm not sure if I should try tinkering with it, but just leave it alone and be happy it works.
