I have found that xorg tends to be really ornery when you set the protocol 
yourself. Try changing to 'auto' (as with your touchpad) and see if that 
doesn't help. If not, I can fire up my laptop and see what I have in 
xorg.conf, as I have similar model (Compaq R3000 series) with touchpad and 
USB mouse working happy together.
