You need to pass the appropriate "vga=" argument at the kernel command line 
(grub.conf or lilo.conf). What you need to pass here is dependant on if you 
use Vesa driver type "vesafb" or "vesafb-tng" in your kernel.

I only use vesafb, and I use "vga=791"
For vesafb-tng I think " vga=0x317 video=vesa:ywrap,mtrr" will do the trick.

A list of modes can be found in Gentoo docs I believe.
