Without realizing it, I've been carrying on this conversation off-list. Well, after some very patient advice from Mr. Nebinger, I solved(?) the problem by recompiling gcc and then recompiling glibc. I posted that to the forums and to the bug report, so hopefully that'll help out other people with the problem.

The error is as mysteriously gone as it appeared; I assume it's all a matter of keeping the toolchain healthy.
