Step 1) emerge xmms-mpg123
Step 2) - open up xmms and go through the following menu hierarchy - Options => Preferences => Audio I/O plugins - select the MAD MPEG decoder plugin - uncheck the "enabled" button on the far right, half-way down the menu dialog - click on "OK"
I've also noticed that it doesn't play wav-files any longer (yes I have the wav-plugin compiled & enabled)...
