Thanks... I see the output but now scratching my head wondering how I
could discover what version was installed... Sounds pretty dumb but I
didn't see anything like a `history' item for qpkg or emerge.

This was a new install from 2004.3 stage2 pkg.  I had emerged quite a
lot of stuff including the basic x11-xorg pkgs and some kde stuff
before the errors showed up, so I suppose something may have needed a
newer gcc as dep but I didn't notice it.  So at this point how can I
discover what version was in use?
